What Was Meant For Evil

Dina Strasser attempts to turn Rebecca Black’s nightmarish debut music video into a learning experience for her ELA students:

Since the layers of ridiculousness in this tune are near impenetrable, you have to be exceptionally focused and intentional in how this song is presented, or you’ll be at it for the whole period or longer. […] Our purpose, I tell them, is to use figurative language to determine why this is the worst song on the planet.

I'm Dan and this is my blog. I'm a former high school math teacher and current head of teaching at Desmos. He / him. More here.

  1. Huh. Was this maybe an April Fool’s joke? From wikipedia: “In an interview with The Sun, Black said that she is recording a new song called “LOL”, which is considered for release as a single, and material for her debut album at Flying Pig Productions studio in Los Angeles.[20]”

  2. Nothing makes me happier than someone whom, instead of complaining, gives valid proof why something is bad.

  3. Dan,

I have been singing the ridiculous song all day… and it’s not even Friday. Great link though, I will forward it to my ELA friends :)
