THIS Is What We Want For Our Students?
October 15th, 2008 by Dan Meyer
Chris Dede just played this video in his early-bird seminar here at Innovative Learning without apparent irony:
I mean did anybody see The Devil Wears Prada?! Anne Hathaway went insane from the non-stop multi-tasking. Is it too much to ask for a little restraint even as we prepare our students to compete with the Chinese / Indian economic menace, etc.? Where's Dina.

Wow, that is wrong on so many levels. Also, all those people will be unemployed soon.
I’m confused. What was the topic of the seminar?
Maybe it was “secret” irony. Maybe it was “I’m so ironic, you can’t even tell I’m ironic” irony.
I don’t…get this….is he saying I’m supposed to teach my kids how to use a smart phone? Cause I’m not gonna.
@Jackie, couldn’t tell you exactly but it was the usual new literacies are necessary for kids who multi-task and learn differently, etc.
Sorry, missed that. I’m too busy curling my eyelashes and calling my fake Italian lover while grabbing Starbucks between classes so that I can be properly emotionally maimed by my meglomaniacal principal in stilettos. This is the REAL world, people.
The worst thing?
It’s boring.
And whatever his point was supposed to be, there has to be a way to make it more succinctly.
“It is not enough to be busy. The question is: what are we busy about?”
– Henry David Thoreau
(oh, god. I *am* a hippie.)
I know. I have to Febreeze everything every time you stop by.
Wait. Is it my Thai crystal stone deodorant, my Birkenstocks, or my green tea aromatherapy infuser? Because no one will tell me. Seriously. Help me help you.
How is it possible to show that video without irony?
Sounds like a great conference. Really makes me regret not spending more time on the circuit.
@Dina, re: “Is it my Thai crystal stone deodorant, my Birkenstocks, or my green tea aromatherapy infuser? Because no one will tell me. Seriously. Help me help you.”
As long as you are using them all at the same time, you are *so* 21st century. Better yet, have your calendar text your cell phone when it’s time to re-apply your Thai crystal stone deodorant, cuz that stuff don’t work at all.
Cheers,
Bill
For the sake of adherence to facts, Bill: I own none of those things. Including a smart phone.
I clicked on your link to Christopher Dede and it all became clear. The guy doesn’t work in an inner city school where the poverty rate is the highest in the nation.
O.k. – so do we educate our students for the way we want the world to be…
or do we educate our students for the way the world is?
Not saying that the world is really this way (or will be).
BTW – I never bothered watching Devil Wears Prada – so what exactly is supposed to be ironic?
[...] thing and they should do it whenever they can. Did they learn this in middle school? Is it just a part of pop culture [...]
